How to Maximize Balloon Shelf Life: Tips and Tricks
If you’re a balloon professional, you certainly had instances where certain balloon products will pop or leak, making the job even harder! That will definitely make for a bad day. It’s very helpful in the long run if balloons are stored properly to extend their life.
I have sold balloons for years. My balloon storage keeps a mild temperature and they age well in the cool California climate.
Balloons typically have a shelf life of 1-2 years from the date of manufacture when stored properly in their original packaging. This can vary depending on the type of balloon, storage conditions, and packaging quality. Local weather conditions may affect stored balloons, especially in higher temperature locations. Latex is a naturally and actively biodegrading slowly. High temperatures do affect latex balloons.
Latex balloons, for example, can become brittle, too soft, gummy, and more prone to popping if stored for too long.
Storing balloons properly can help extend their lifespan and keep them looking great for your next event. Here are some tips:
1. Clean and Dry:
Before storing, make sure your balloons are clean and completely dry in order to prevent mold and deterioration.
2. Talcum Powder
Adding talcum powder to balloons while storing will keep them from being sticky. They will be more soft and pliable in the future, with less squeaking.
3. Room Temperature:
If refrigeration isn’t an option, store balloons at room temperature, ideally between 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 degrees Celsius).
4. Refrigeration:
Though not necessary, you can refrigerate or even freeze balloons to extend their shelf life. Just make sure they are in a sealed bag to prevent condensation.
5. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat:
Store balloons in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources like motors and hot water pipes. Excessive heat will bring a decrease in quality within a short time.
6. Use Sealable Bags:
For extra protection, store balloons in sealable plastic bags or wrap them in cling wrap. This helps keep out dust and moisture.
7. Not in the car!
Do not store balloons in a vehicle (inside or in the trunk) or a garage where temperatures fluctuate.
8. Use Containers
Use containers with a good lid and don’t overstuff the container. It is essential to let the balloons “breathe”. If you pack the container too tight, they could stick and pop more over time.
By following these tips, you can keep your balloons in great shape for longer.
